What is Chiropractic?
Your nervous system is the primary control center for your entire body.  Its relationship with the spine is the focus of the practice of chiropractic. The spine develops in utero to provide two primary functions: (1) allow for freedom of movement and (2) house and protect the spinal cord. When the vertebrae of the spine become subluxated (misaligned) through trauma (physical, emotional or chemical) or repetitive injury, two major consequences will result: (1) the range of motion becomes limited and (2) spinal nerves emerging from the spinal cord are compromised. Chiropractors use the term "subluxation" to describe such disruptions. Interruption of nerve flow can eventually lead to pain, disability, disease and an overall decrease in the quality of life. Conversely, the removal of that interference (by spinal adjustments) has been shown to have significant, lasting health benefits. Through the adjustment of the subluxation, the doctor of chiropractic endeavors to restore normal nerve expression. The body is then able to respond appropriately to any imbalance in the system, thus relieving symptoms and restoring health.

Because there are many different types of patients, our office offers several chiropractic adjusting techniques.  Among these techniques are:  Gonstead, Diversified, Activator, Thompson and Palmer Toggle.  We often use therapies such as ultrasound, intersegmental traction, Tens, massage and trigger point therapy to facilitate your chiropractic treatment, but the spinal adjustment is how chiropractic makes a difference.

Patients who have not responded to traditional medical or chiropractic care have another option.  Both Dr. Chisholm and Dr. Schaefer are certified in Manipulation Under Anesthesia (MUA).  MUA is a non-invasive procedure increasingly offered for acute and chronic conditions, including: spinal pain, radiculopathies, joint pain, fibrous adhesions and long term pain syndromes, including chronic headaches. It is generally considered safe and is utilized to treat pain arising from the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine as well as the sacroiliac and pelvic regions.  More information on MUA...

It's important to understand that outside of chiropractic care, there are things you can do to help speed up progress during your treatment.  Our office offers nutritional counseling as well as rehabilitative exercise.  We work closely with other health care professionals to help you get the highest quality care possible in order for you to attain optimal health.
We often hear from potential patients that they would like to give chiropractic care a try, but they are nervous about the "noise" an adjustment makes or that it might hurt.  These are normal concerns for a patient who has never had a chiropractic adjustment.  Most chiropractors employ several different techniques for just this reason.  Whereas with Gonstead or Diversified techniques you might hear a "popping" noise, techniques like Activator and Thompson generally do not have this result.  Our doctors are able to adapt their techniques to your specific needs.
